National Astronomical Observatory of Rozhen

The National Astronomical Observatory of Rozhen is located on the Rhodope peak of Rozhen, at an altitude of 1,750 meters, at a distance of 25 kilometers from the town of Smolyan. The observatory was established in 1981. It is the largest astronomical observatory on the Balkan Peninsula and in Southeastern Europe.
The Rozhen Observatory is equipped with 4 telescopes. It provides a wide range of observations on astronomical and astrophysical tasks – from dynamics and physics of objects in the Solar System to research objects outside the galaxy such as asteroids and comets, spectrums of stars of different classes and types of variability, star clusters, close and distant galaxies, quasars.
The National Astronomical Observatory is well equipped for scientific meeting conduction, training courses, and schools. A visitation center with an 18 cm demonstration telescope, a lecture hall and a museum collection is available. Lectures and demonstrations for individual and organized tourists are held under the observatory dome.

The observatory can be reached by the main road Chepelare – Smolyan. It is located at a distance of 15 kilometers from Chepelare. There is a turnover to the left at Rozhenski polyani (Rozhen meadows); the road after the turnover leads to the observatory after 6 kilometers.
